Sample Size
In a study with diabetic mice, what parameters are needed to compute a suitable sample size?

We have a specific experiment in mind, but previous researches don’t show their SD in their papers and I think that’s what missing and why we can’t compute our sample size. Can we still compute without SD?

An estimate of ? is necessary and very important in calculating sample size. There are 3 ways of getting this:
1. Run a small experiment of arbitrary sample size to get this rough estimate before running your designed experiment.
2. Get some experts together and discuss it. The estimate doesn’t have to be exact, but the closer it is to the true ?, the smaller will be your sample size to meet your objectives.
3. Assume worse case. If you are testing for some proportion, p, of mice meeting a requirement, then worse case would be p = 0.50 (50%).
