What is the purpose of using after shave?

What happens to my skin if I don’t use after shave after shaving my beard / mustache?

It isn’t strictly necessary, it just makes your skin feel better after shaving with a razor. A razor scrapes your skin and makes little cuts and nicks. After shave lotion is an astringent that helps close and heal the damage. But depending on what your skin is like, and how you shave, it might not really help at all.

Also it smells nice. 8^)
