Sun Cream

The Six Critical Beach Sun Safety Tips for Children

Australia has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and some of the most treacherous.
For a parent to keep their kids safe on the beach there are a few rules to remember.

The first thing to remember is sun safety.

Australia has the highest rate of Skin Cancer in the world, so sun safety on the beach is essential, especially to ingrain healthy beach sun safety habits in children.

The top sun beach safety tips to protect yourself and your children are:

  1. Plan outdoor beach activities outside the peak sun ultra-violet hours of 10am to 3pm. Planning for sun safety for children means that early morning and late afternoon are the best beach safety times.
  2. Get full Shade. On the beach use a tree, umbrella or other shade to cast a shadow to cover your whole body
  3. Slip on sun protective clothing: Chose clothing that is cool and also covers as much of your neck and arms as possible. In Australia we call these “rashies”. Materials such as Lycra stay sun protective when they are wet.
  4. Slop on sunscreen.  Make it is at least Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 30. Put it on clean dry skin at least 20 minutes before going outside and reapply at least every 2 hours. For best beach safety make sure that your sun cream is water resistant.
  5. Slap on a full brimmed hat. Make sure your hat covers your nose and ears and that you cannot see through it. A sun safety tip is that if you can see through the fabric then the sun can also get through.
  6. Wear good quality sunglasses. In looking at sun safety for children, sunglasses are often overlooked. Sunglasses protect your eyes and are important for both adults and children to wear at the beach.

Portable Ultrasonic

Why When And Where To Get The Ozone Air Purifier

There is nothing more frustrating than having allergies act up while spending time inside the house, but unfortunately because of the polluted world we live in, it is an inescapable reality for a lot of us asthma victims. Let’s face it; No matter how dust free your house is, there is always going to be annoying little pollutants floating in the air, waiting to irritate someone. Be it pet odors, cooking odors, cigarette smoke or any other air contaminating odors you commonly find in occupied homes. Because of this problem, they invented all kinds of fancy technology to eliminate all the, should I say – stinky, contaminated bacteria.

Though often questioned and many times criticized, you start seeing all kinds of these air purifiers hit the market. Many manufacturers have started to produce them and it’s amazing how quickly they have started to become a more common household product. For a long time price was a major issue with a lot of folks, but because of the competition within the market place, you can get a reasonable air purifier for next to nothing. Perhaps the best place to look for one would be online. eBay is loaded with them and they are cheap too. The only downside is the shipping costs but hey, you never had to leave the comfort of your home to get it. Convenience comes at a price and in this case, it might even be cheaper than buying one at your local electronic outlet.

Now the question: There is a hundred different ones out there, which one should I get? They come in various shapes and sizes and each one might have a special characteristic to it, but if you get a new one (or a fairly recently manufactured one) even the basic one will be just fine and will do the job.

Smoke Relief:
IQ Air Health Pro Compact Air Purifier $250
This might be one of the smaller more compact systems available when it comes to allergy and asthma type systems, but it is still a high performance particle control systems. This is a terrific purifier for smaller houses and makes it more convenient for small apartments and offices as well. The Health Pro effectively removes every type of air pollutant with the same high efficient as the larger models. The Hepa filters are certified to remove 99.5% of all particulates!

Allergies & Asthma
BlueAir 501 $250
This is a great system for anyone that is living with allergies, asthma or other respiratory conditions, or for anyone that just wants clean and breathable air! The smaller 501 was rated 6th by Consumer Reports and has been a long time contender in air purifiers. The value in this system also adds to its quiet operation, low energy use, and steel construction that is easy to maintain. The filter needs to be replaced every 6 months.

Mold & Bacteria
Sunbeam Portable Ultrasonic Pest Repeller And Air Ionizer $33.00
The SB600-2 ultrasonic pest repeller and built in ionizer eliminates pests by emitting waved of ultrasonic signals that pests hate! This item is however, safe to use around birds, dogs, cats and reptiles. Warning do not use around domesticated pets such as rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils or other rodent type pets! The compact system is great for home or office use, simply plug the system into a standardized electrical outlet.

Because there is so many companies making these ozone air purifiers, it is safe to say that the great number of competition has forced each one of these ozone air purifier companies to bring their product up to code – as suggested by the health and safety researchers and regulators. Once again, it definitely is a product worth getting if you have allergic reactions to the air in your home right now or have asthma type problems or asthma related problems!

Drench Tan
Lotions with skin bronzers (light tanning effect) aka “Sun-Kissed Glow” lotions… Is it ok to…?

I have Skin Drench Daily Radiance Moisturizer body lotion and Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer body lotion and I was wondering if they’re ok to use on my face as well… my face tends to be a little bit lighter than my body so I dont really want to use these products if they can only be used on my body-> that would just make the difference in tone between my face and the rest of my body more obvious. I’m thinking that they might be too oily but Idk…. Also, have a medium-olive skin-tone naturally … Im not worried about looking orange because its yet to happen with various tanning methods….

The body lotions are meant for your body only, hence the name “body lotion”. They sell seperate lotions designed for your face, try using that.

Tanning Sunless
Can I use the sunless tanning spray if I am on acne medication or bleaching cream?

I recently went to my dermatologist who prescribed me HQRA which is Retin-A, plus bleaching cream for my sunspots. But it is strongly advised that I stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen when going outside. Does anyone know if using a sunless tanning spray or Mystic/Magic Tan is safe? Let me know please.

Do not mix your perscribed stuff with the tanning spray because you do not want the chemicals to conflict with each other and have a different or unwanted reaction. Continue your perscription and later use tanning spray.

Body Drench
How can i stop sweating, it’s not my arm pits, it’s my whole body?

My face is often drenched, my hair gets wet, between my leg too making it look like i’ve wet my self. The body can be hidden under clothes but this can’t. I don’t smell, shower every day, use perfumes and deodorants. Can anyone tell my why and how to stop it

Agree with one poster, could it be menopause. Even if young you can be pre-menopausal. A blood test will determine that.

What is your salt intake? The body gets rid of salt thru prespiration.

Heavy Sweating

Why do I sweat so much? By Lewis P. Stolman, MD

Nov. 6, 2000 — The problem you describe is called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. And yes, there’s lots you can do.

Sweating, of course, is perfectly normal. It’s one way the body maintains its temperature. We sweat when it’s hot or when we’ve been exercising vigorously. And when the moisture produced by perspiration evaporates, it cools the skin, and therefore the core temperature of the body.

But sometimes this nifty system goes awry. As many as one in 100 people suffer the kind of problem you’re having: When they’re under stress, the sweat starts flowing, usually on the palms, soles, face, and armpits.

For whatever reason, some people can undergo extreme stress and not sweat at all. Others find themselves drenched in perspiration from just having to say a few words at a meeting. We don’t really understand why one person’s threshold for sweating is different from another’s. But we do know that the tendency to sweat under stress sometimes runs in families.

If you find yourself sweating all the time, and all over — not just on your palms, soles, and underarms — it may be a sign of a serious illness like tuberculosis, some kind of cancer, or thyroid disease. Talk to a doctor immediately.

Fortunately, most people who sweat heavily under stress aren’t in any danger. But they may feel quite embarrassed, and the problem can get in the way of their careers. I’ve treated artists who can’t work because their palms get too sweaty and musicians who have trouble playing their instruments.

How do you stop it? The simplest remedy is an antiperspirant, which can be used on hands and feet as well as in the underarm area. Over-the-counter versions work well. If these don’t prove strong enough, you can ask your doctor for a prescription-strength version. And if that doesn’t help, your doctor may suggest a tranquilizer (such as Valium) for those special occasions when you know you’re likely to be extra nervous — a job interview, some kind of public speaking, or even a first date.

In particularly stubborn cases, we may have to try other approaches. One option is surgery to remove sweat glands in the affected area. Another is to inject small amounts of Botox — botulinum toxin — to block the nerves that trigger sweat glands. This treatment must be repeated every 6 to 8 months, however, and the injections can be painful, especially in the palms and feet. Finally, if all else fails for sweaty hands, a surgical procedure may be performed to sever the nerves to the affected sweat glands. However, this is a serious operation that carries with it the risk of complications.

In my experience, the simplest and most cost-effective way to turn off the faucet is a treatment called iontophoresis. This involves applying a low-level electrical current to the affected area, which essentially blocks the sweat duct. For many patients, a one-time treatment may control excessive sweating for good.

The bottom line: Don’t worry too much if stress leaves you with sweaty palms and damp circles under your arms. Make the right moves and you can stay dry. You shouldn’t have to sweat it forever.

Lewis P. Stolman, MD, is associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a member of the Dermatology and Laser Center of Northern New Jersey. He recently published a review of treatments for hyperhidrosis in the journal Dermatologic Clinics, October 1998.
