Eye Renewal

Start Every Day With Self Renewal

Throughout our busy work day, whether running a home business, working 9 to 5, being a stay at home mom or dad, or even a combination of one or two of these scenarios, there is often a lack of planned down time.

Now you may be saying I do take coffee and lunch breaks, or I run to the gym after work, or I watch some television, while the kids nap, but do you schedule time to do nothing.

Often, it is hard to feel refreshed and relaxed when we add even more activity to our already busy lives. Most times just a little shift in our daily routine is all that is needed.

Consider starting your day with a few minutes of silence when you first awaken, instead of turning on the radio or television or logging onto the internet.

Take the time to be consciously aware of the silence, to gaze out the window at nature, to observe a bird, hopping around dew covered grass, digging up his early morning treat.

Marvel at a beautiful sunrise as the slanted rays of light, burn up the atmosphere and signal the start of another day.

Allow your mind to wander and think of something fun to do this weekend, give yourself something to look forward to, perhaps something you are passionate about, which will re-energize your spirit.

I encourage you to take yourself away from your normal routine, time to be silent, to let your thoughts drift, to feel every muscle in your body start to relax, close your eyes, smile and cherish these moments.

Starting your day with a few minutes of relaxation and reflection will lead to a better frame of mind, resulting in a more productive and meaningful day.

To start yourself on a journey of daily self-renewal, create a list of questions to ask yourself and to reflect on, even if you do not know the answer immediately.

Give yourself something to ponder about, I promise the answer will come to you and will have an impact on your lifestyle.

To help you get started, consider these questions and then add your own personalized questions.

1. What do I count as blessings in my life right now?

2. What am I really committed to right now?

3. What am I passionate about?

4. What can I do today to be a better person, leader, family member?

5. What opportunities do I have today to connect with people and inspire them?

6. What in my life, my relationships have I taken positive action on?

As you answer these questions, also reflect on the how your answers make you feel. How does taking positive action make a difference in your life?

How empowering will you feel by inspiring others? A simple note or a few words of encouragement or even just a smile may make a dramatic change for someone in your life and it is absolutely free.

By giving yourself the gift of self-renewal, you will find yourself having the energy to get through your work time more efficiently, while relaxed and clear-headed.

Once this daily routine becomes a habit, consider taking time for regular breaks from your work routine throughout the year, with a weekend retreat, an entire week vacation or perhaps a one day adventure.

Do something out of the ordinary. Rather then always taking your car and driving, try a train ride to your destination or a cruise to nowhere.

Once you let your imagination take over, the possibilities are endless!

Skin Goddess
Why is it that in some pictures you can look bad but in others you look good?

And how you always look different in pics than from the mirror?

It’s funny how people can look stunning one minute then look ugly the next…

I’ve seen some really bad pics of beautiful celebrities, one pic they look messy(skin looks bad, etc) then the next they look like a goddess!

It’s also funny how some people are gorgeous but don’t show it well enough, you can see they may be pretty but they have a lot of spots, messy hair, messy eyebraws no make up, etc. but as soon as you sort some of these little things out they look way better, even like a different person sometimes!

Does anyone else notice this?

Street Diva

Rotherham Tourist Guide

Rotherham is a South Yorkshire town with a population of almost 250,000; and it is the principle town in a borough that is 70% rural.

Surrounded by historical villages and woodlands, numerous historical sites and ancient monuments, the town centre is a bustling shopping district, with three recommended restaurants and a superclub. There is an impressive range of sporting and leisure facilities, with exciting days out for the family only a short distance from the interchange.

A significant amount of funding is coming in to Rotherham, and plans to renovate the main market and shopping streets are currently being drawn up. The town is well connected by transport links, and within easy reach of Meadowhall, Sheffield and Doncaster.

History

Rotherham began its transition to a busy market town during the Saxon era; and earned a reputation as a modern and fashionable town with the creation of a college to rival those of Oxbridge. The town’s fortunes dipped during the sixteenth century, until coal seams were discovered in the area that provided employment for thousands of men. Steel and iron also provided work, and Templeborough steelworks alone employed 10,000 men.

Clifton Park Museum has been nominated for ‘Museum of the Year’ on two occasions, and documents the social history of the area. The York and Lancaster Regimental Museum has exhibits from the last 200 years of military history. The Magna Science Adventure Centre is housed in the old Templeborough steelworks, and explores industrial history in the area.

Art Galleries

Rotherham Art Gallery is located in Rotherham Arts Centre and comprises three exhibition spaces. The gallery showcases large and small collections, with space available to hire by local artists and a regularly alternating programme of temporary exhibitions. Included in the permanent collection are Victorian paintings, photographs and Modern Art.

Rotherham College of Art frequently hosts exhibitions of its students’ work, and there are numerous art competitions aimed at artists (including young people) who live in and around the area.

Theatres

Rotherham Arts Centre comprises a small, 200-seater theatre that regularly hosts small-scale drama productions of touring shows. Large-scale productions are rarely shown, but previous shows have received critical acclaim and proved popular with theatregoers.

Rotherham Civic Theatre is based in a desanctified church, and has been open since 1960. The theatre stages a programme of professional and amateur shows, with an ever-popular annual Christmas pantomime.

There are a variety of dance and drama schools in the area, and Rotherham Youth Theatre stages regular performances at Rotherham Arts Centre. There is an annual production by Rotherham College of Arts and Technology.

Restaurants

The Crown Restaurant is located inside The Consort Hotel, and serves British and international cuisine; the restaurant is one of three recommended by Good Restaurant Guide. The Regency Restaurant is another; serving modern European dishes, and based in The Carlton Park Hotel. The third is The Swallow Hotel, serving English cuisine at reasonable rates.

Cafe Thai serves authentic Thai dishes and offers a takeaway service. China Town is a restaurant, with takeaway and delivery service.

Cafe Noor is a popular Halal sandwich shop, offering a catering service and takeaway.

Pubs/Bars

Rotherham CAMRA voted The Bluecoat its ‘Pub of the Year’ in 2006. The bar’s prices are low, and a wide selection of drinks offered, with a resident jazz band performing on Monday evenings and other live music throughout the week. Other recommended pubs include Hare and Hounds, Masons Arms and Effingham Arms.

Fubar-Snafu is a pub and live music venue, serving beer, wine and a range of cocktails. The bar hosts live bands, and an annual Battle of the Bands competition. A catering and buffet service is available.

The Sitwell Arms comprises a large restaurant and carvery, comfortable beer garden and children’s play area. The bar is located in a semi-rural area, just outside of the town centre.

Nightclubs

Liquid and Diva is open four nights a week, and presents the latest chart, dance and r’n'b from resident and visiting DJs. The club has been recently refurbished and boasts unique and stylish d?r. Clubbers must be over 25 to be admitted into Diva.

Escape Bar and Nightclub comprises three rooms, and presents commercial dance and pop. The club is currently open four nights a week, with plans in the pipeline to make it five. Drinks are cheap and special offers are plentiful.

The Underground Nightclub offers speed garage and funky house four nights a week from four resident DJs and one guest. Entry is free on Friday and Saturday nights.

Club Envy is open four nights a week, and presents pop, dance, retro and r’n'b.

Shopping

Rotherham town centre is home to all the main high street stores, and All Saints Square – a town square surrounded by shops and cafes, with a large BBC screen in the centre. Most of the shopping streets are pedestrianised, and the development of more units for large retailers is planned.

Rotherham is home to five markets; including The Centenary Market, with 88 units, and an outdoor market, with 115. The town centre market comprises 40 stalls. There are more markets in nearby Wath and Rawmarsh.

Parkgate Retail World contains 34 major chain stores and restaurants, and offers free parking. There are antiques and bric a brac retailers located on Parkgate High Street.

Sports

Brampton Leisure Centre is one of more than a dozen in the town, and offers sports and athletics facilities and a fitness studio. There are also a range of activities for families and children throughout the year.

Avago Indoor Carting Centre provides go-karting facilities every day of the week, and offers a licensed bar, family lounge and buffet. The Brampton Raceway is located just outside the town centre and offers motor racing.

Rotherham Superbowl has ten-pin bowling facilities and a fast food restaurant, and is open seven days a week.

Sitwell Park is regarded as one of the best golf courses in the Rotherham, and Lindrick Park is of an international standard. Membership is not required to play on either course.

Performance Super

Super Motivation

Super Motivation.

Super Motivation is self sustaining, organization-wide, high motivation. There are 2 major components of human performance: ability & motivation. They are related as follows:

      Performance = Ability x Motivation

Ability means nothing unless it is used. When multiplied by motivation, ability comes alive!

All people without any exception have virtually unlimited motivational potential. This innate self-potential has simply been temporarily suppressed because most employees are working in environments that inhibit its suppression.

In a Super Motivating environment, even those with formerly low levels of motivation will be able to excel, while those with higher levels of motivation will be able to realize their full potential. Although high motivation is not difficult to attain, it tends to be much more difficult to sustain. Motivation can be sustained only if it is built into the organization itself. This way, motivation will no longer be subject to the whims of people or the initiation of new programs that come & go.

The Super Motivation approach involves two parallel processes. The first is reducing de motivators; the second is adding motivators. The combination of these two processes will create dramatic improvements in the motivational climate of any organization willing to accept the challenge. De motivators include all of those nagging daily occurrences that frustrate employees & drain so much of their motivational energy. Motivators on the other hand does not include people, they are environmental conditions.

Self-Motivation is the most powerful motivational force there is. It releases the latent motivational energy residing in all of us, & has the potential to energize extraordinary human performance.

Highly motivated people possess their own internal incentives to act. They don’t wait for external forces to motivation them. Highly motivated people are invariably driven by strong internal desires.

According to Shad Helmstetter, “To motivate someone, anyone, to do anything, you must influence his emotions.”

When positive thoughts arose positive / energizing emotions, large quantities of motivational energy are typically released. This in turn, energizes productive &, most importantly, creative behavior. Creative behavior manifests itself when employees go beyond the “normal” requirements of the job & take initiative to solve a problem, improve a work procedure, or give a customer extraordinary service. This is the kind of behavior that characterizes the highly motivated employees.

The motivating cycle goes something like this. Positive thoughts result in positive / energizing emotions which results in high energy. Once you consistently possess high energy in your place of work irrespective of the external conditions it culminates into productive / creative behavior. While enhancing productive behavior, the de-motivators which drain the talent & energy of the individual must be attacked. Thus, slowly & steadily you are winning the war on de-motivators.

The motivators have the awesome power to positively transform the context of work. They motivate because they increase desire. Motivators make people want to work, want to get involved, want to learn, want to achieve, want to gain recognition & so on. It is an active state. People who are motivated want to participate in life, not just be idle observers.

For super motivation to work or create wonders one needs to go ahead with a super motivating planning. As work becomes more complex & competition grows keener, organization must become increasingly skillful at planning. It is becoming more & more apparent that “those who fail to plan, plan to fail.”

If planning is so essential, them why do so many smart people & organizations fail to plan? And why does the prospect of planning generate so little enthusiasm?

The reason is two fold: Most of use doesn’t know how to plan, & we are not motivated to do so.

Formal planning requires time, discipline, procedures, paper work & commitment. It also requires people to adopt new behaviors that often lie outside their comfort zones. Given the widespread low motivation to plan, it should not be surprising that most of us find it much easier to take immediate action & worry about the consequences at a later date. Thus, to go ahead with super motivation you not only need to know how to overcome resistance to planning but also know how to achieve high involvement planning.

Once the planning process in place, the next is the revitalizing the production system which is a motivational challenge facing any organization. Production is what most employees are paid for, & what employees spend most of their time doing. Everybody, in every organization, is in involved in some form of production work. It is the value-adding process through which something of less value is converted into something with more value.

After the high productive systems are put in place the next step is to transform the communication system openly & powerfully. Approximately 80% of our waking hours are spent in some form of communication. Communication involves not only effective communication amongst members but also a superlative writing & listening skills. When the communication is good, relationships tend to be positive; when it is poor, relationships also tend to be poor. When people are communicating effectively, nothing is impossible.

Once the communication aspects are taken care of, the next aspect is investment in training their employees. Training systems in large organizations generally offer a wide range of developmental activities, including new employee orientation, job-skills training, continuing professional education, supervisory & management development, interpersonal skills training, conceptual skills training & even the basic skills training. Regardless, of the methods used, the training system in any organization is aimed at enhancing the collective competence of the workforce.

After the training, the next step is the evaluation. However, it is not evaluation itself that is the problem; the problem is how evaluation is used at work. In other contexts, such as in sports & games, evaluation is highly motivating. In fact, evaluation in sports is so motivating that enthusiasts spend endless hours studying evaluation statistics, even memorizing them. So why can’t evaluation be motivating at work? The answer is: It can.

Once the evaluation system in any organization gets successfully drawn the next step is the reward. Many organizations are increasingly discovering that not only are traditional rewards becoming extremely limited in their ability to motivate today’s workforce, but they are also extremely costly. Just as with other organizational systems, motivationally transforming the reward system requires looking at it with a fresh, new perspective. The most important question to ask in evaluating the reward system in your organization is, “Do the rewards elicit the kind of performance management desires?”

Rewards of low cost, creative rewards to tell employees how much they are appreciated, such as following.

  • Refreshments.
  • Meals.
  • Gift certificates.
  • Magazine subscriptions.
  • Books, audiotapes, videotapes.
  • Memberships.
  • Personalized items.
  • Work environment.
  • Training.
  • Sports.
  • Transportation.
  • Commendations.

If one starts using a small proportion of these concepts & principles as enunciated above, one should be able to increase the effectiveness of the organization scientifically & significantly. So make the Super Motivation happen by following some of these guidelines & principles.

Super Motivation definitely shall increase productivity & profit; it won’t add a penny to your costs. There is no doubt in our mind: World-class organizations need world-class motivation-& the most successful organizations in the future will be SUPER MOTIVATED.

Super Motivation Approach = Putting Super Motivation into Action which is comprising of

  • Super Motivating Planning
  • Super Motivating Production
  • Super Motivating Communication
  • Super Motivating Training
  • Super Motivating Evaluation
  • Super Motivating Rewards
  • Super Motivation: Making it happen.

Owning a Bar on a Tropical Island – is it Really a Dream?

In a good year, in excess of four million people visit Phuket in Thailand. A lot of those visitors will love it. Some will love it so much that they want to live here.

Every year thousands of people come to Phuket hoping to set up a new life on a tropical island. Many of them need to make a living and quickly discover that employment opportunities for foreigners are very limited. So what are their options? Well one of the most likely avenues is to invest in your own business. And what is the easiest business to get into? Owning a bar.

To many people it sounds like a dream. A life on a tropical island, days by the beach and evenings partying in your bar. But does the reality match the dream?

It is something I considered doing when I first arrived in Phuket. I checked out the options; spoke with estate agents, bar owners, even bar girls. In the end, I decided it just wasn’t worth it.

I was new to Phuket and still naive to many of the pitfalls that await bar owners but even then, I could see there were so many problems with owning a bar in Phuket. To begin with, ‘owning a bar’ is a misnomer as you will almost certainly be leasing and probably at very unfavourable terms.

It is difficult to make a decent living from a bar and in fact most fail in the first two years. Even if your bar does make money, your working status will probably be illegal. The laws in Thailand are stacked against foreigners owning a small business.

As much as all these things concerned me, they were not my biggest concern. The biggest factor in turning me away from owning a bar was the lifestyle. I got to know quite a few bar owners and when I looked at their lives, I knew it wasn’t for me. It is just such a crap life.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a night on the beer. Even several nights on the beer. But having to do it every night at the same bar as a job? It would soon lose its charm not to mention the obvious health problems that go with such a lifestyle.

Since I made that decision to leave the bar business alone, there has not been one second when I have looked back and regretted it. I know plenty of bar owners and consider several to be friends but I never envy their lives. Recently, the untimely death of one of those friends really drove it home for me.

He was not yet 50 years old. He owned a bar in one of the sois (side streets) off Soi Bangla in Patong. He was a nice guy, easy going and easy to talk to. Although I saw him no more than once a week, we always enjoyed a good chat and he was one of my favourite bar owners.

Over the previous year, he had a few health problems. He had been in hospital several times and the advice from the doctors was plain and clear – stop drinking!

The problem is it is very difficult to stop drinking when you are a bar owner. The two things that bring customers to these small bars are the girls and the owner. And often the girls will not work very well if the owner is not there.

Regular customers like to have a chat with the owner. Often, if the owner is not there they will just move on to the next bar. Quite simply for these bars to work, the owner has to be there most of the time.

So couldn’t my friend have drunk soft drinks? Well he did that for a few days but the boredom got to him. You spend the evening sitting at your bar, bombarded with the deafening music that these bar complexes seem to think is a good drinking ambience. For a good part of the evening, you may not have any customers, but still you need to be there just in case. You can watch the TV but you can’t hear it. Your only company is the bar girls who are probably nagging for time off or free drink.

And when the customers do arrive, they want to get drunk and they want you to get drunk with them. Of course, it is okay for the customers. If they are on holiday, they are only doing it for two weeks before they return to their regular lives. The bar owner is doing it night-after-night, year-after-year.

They offer to buy you drinks and it is bad business not to accept. If you do keep your discipline and stay sober then the evening is insufferable. Drunks are very entertaining when you are drunk with them. When you are sober, there is nothing worse than trying to laugh at their inane ramblings.

So despite the doctor’s warnings, my friend was soon drinking again. It just goes with the territory of owning a bar; you are going to drink a lot.

It all caught up with my friend. He had a bad motorbike accident. He never drove drunk but motorbike accidents happen easily out here. He discharged himself from hospital too quickly, again ignoring doctor’s advice. His next boozing session was too much for a body that was tired of it. He passed away in his sleep.

The crazy thing is he didn’t even need the bar. He had worked hard in his home country and was in a position to retire. I and other friends had tried to persuade him to give it up. The problem was he was one of the few bar owners who was making a good profit and he found it hard to walk away from a good business. In the end he was too good at being a bar owner for his own good.

The strange thing is most of the people who buy into bars have come to Phuket for a better lifestyle. They want to live in a tropical island paradise. Phuket is their dream home and owning a bar is how they will fund their life here. The problem is owning a bar excludes them from enjoying the island.

Most bar owners wake up mid-afternoon with a hangover. They lounge around their budget apartment shaking off the hangover until it is time to go into the bar and start work again. They could do this anywhere. Phuket’s glorious beaches, islands and other tourist attractions are irrelevant to the bar owners because they hardly see them.

I know a couple of bar owners who did not even know there had been a tsunami until the evening when they set off to work. I know another who after three years in Phuket had not yet seen Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi Islands, Nai Yang Beach, Nai Harn Beach, in fact anywhere more than a few kilometers from Patong.

I don’t want to totally put off potential bar owners. I just want to open their eyes to the sort of life they will be buying into. I think for the right type of character, under the right circumstances, it is an okay option. If you are young, you can handle this lifestyle much better. I know when I was in my twenties I did lots of boozing and was always able to shake it off ready for the next session. As you get older, your powers of recovery diminish.

For somebody who is looking for a couple of years partying and is willing to get in and out, owning a bar in Phuket is a decent option. If you have the sort of discipline where you can go to the bar and entertain customers without getting drunk every night, then maybe it is for you. But as a long-term source of income – for most people it is just not worth the sacrifice.

Another bar owner friend decided to sell up after a couple of years in the business. He was a young guy and his bar was making him a living. The problem was he had got to the stage where he hated his bar. He hated going to the same place night after night, he was sick and tired of dealing with bargirls and their petty squabbles and he was tired of feeling crap all the time.

So he sold up and got out with a nice little profit. It wasn’t until after he sold the bar that he discovered the reason why he felt crap all the time. It wasn’t just the hangovers; they were masking the real problem. He had Leukemia.

I’m not saying that owning a bar actually caused his Leukemia but it certainly did not help his body deal with it. What it did do was put him in a frame of mind where he thought it was normal to feel bad all the time and he accepted it. Fortunately, he got out in time, was diagnosed and returned to his home country where he was successfully treated.

He is now all clear and he hopes that one day he can move back to Thailand. At the moment, his regular check-ups prohibit that. He says that now he looks back at his time in Phuket and realises he was in a rut. He was making enough money to live but he couldn’t save anything. His life revolved around going to his bar every night so he was just not doing the things that drew him to Thailand in the first place. He would never return to the bar business in Patong.

So to recap. If you are thinking about becoming a bar owner in Patong, what can you expect? Well you will spend most nights sitting at your bar waiting for customers and listening to dreadful, loud music. You will struggle to make a worthwhile profit. You will have to deal with the antics of your bar girls. You can decide to either spend your evenings sober and bored or drunk and happy.

Assuming you go for the drunk and happy option (most bar owners do) you will eventually pay for it. I don’t know a single bar owner who looks like a picture of health. It is a demanding life and if you do it long term you are probably taking a few years off your life expectancy.

You could take the attitude that work is always crap. It is crap in your my home country so you might as well have crap work in Phuket. Well fair enough, as long as you go into the bar business with your eyes open and not with some rose-tinted vision of days by the beach and nights partying.

Infamous Tanning

A Look at Champagne

Traditionally, Champagne has always a way to celebrate milestones or toast the bride and groom on their marriage.  Considered to be a flexible beverage, Champagne can be served with a meal or with dessert.  For many years, this truly refreshing and exotic drink has been used as a way of celebration and just enjoying the times that lie ahead.

Champagne comes from the vineyards of the French region.  If you get a bottle and notice Champagne imprinted on the label, you can rest assured that the bottle was produced in the vineyards of France.  If you don’t get Champagne that was produced in the infamous French regions, you are pretty much just buying the standard sparkling wine.  You should also make sure that the bottle is spelled “Champagne”, with a capital C.  French manufacturers are very protective of this very name, and therefore are the only ones that are authorized to use it.

Champagne is made using three different types of grape – Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.  Noir and Meunier are types of black grapes, while the well known Chardonnay is a type of white grape.  The label on the bottle will signify what type of Champagne you are buying, so you’ll know what flavor to expect.  There are also types of this wine that are a blend of different grapes, providing quite an exquisite taste to say the least.

Much like sparkling wine, Champagne is very common with celebrations and such.  Although it is actually considered to be a type of sparkling wine, Champagne is much better.  You have to be careful where you buy it though, as a lot of manufacturers like to use cheaper grapes, which don’t taste the same.  If you have ever tasted this wine before – you’ll know first hand what quality tastes like.

A lot of people prefer Champagne because of the bubbles that are known to spew forth once a bottle has been uncorked.  The bubbles that spew from this wine are the result of tiny drops of liquid that are disturbed by the carbonic acid gas.  Once the liquid is disturbed, the bubbles form and short out of the bottle.  This is a natural reaction of the double fermentation process that can only be found with a bottle of Champagne.

The next time you have a celebration and need something to make the celebration a bit more interesting, you should grab a bottle of Champagne.  Few things compliment a celebration like the bursting bubbles of a fine bottle.  You can find quality Champagne at ABC stores or other stores that sell alcoholic beverages.  Even though it may cost you a bit of money – when you pop the top you’ll be glad you bought it.
